Once again we have been invited by The Prospect Park Zoo to participate
in their Annual Shearing Days.
The Yarn Tree is looking for volunteers to show off their skills while
interacting with the children who will be attending this event.
Please bear in mind that this is an event for children, so we want to
keep things simple!
This year the event will take place on April
30th and May 1st. They have asked that we be there from noon to
4 pm. So expect to be at the Zoo by 11:00 am to help with set up and stay
after 4:00 for clean-up. If the weather is good we will be outdoors, if
inclement weather we will move inside.
Everyone who participates will receive a 10%
off coupon from The Yarn Tree .
Spinners
Both wheel and drop spindle.
The Yarn Tree will supply fiber, a spinning wheel and we will have
cd spindles for the kids to try.
Weavers
The Yarn Tree will supply an already warped looms with stands. You will
help the kids to weave on the loom.
Felters
Shannon will be in charge of the felting demo, you will help her to teach
the kids how to make felted balls!
Dyers
I will be running this demo, we will do kool-aid dyeing with the kids.
Knitting
We will be doing finger knitting with the kids. The Yarn Tree will supply
the yarn and you the fingers! If you don’t know how to finger knit
we will show you!
Crochet
Again we will work with our fingers - teaching the kids how to crochet
a chain with their fingers.
For almost all the demos the kids will be able to take something home
with them. Spinning, they can have the little bit of yarn they’ve
spun, felting they will take home their felted ball, Dyeing they will
have a little packet of dyed fleece to take home. For both crochet and
knitting they will take home their ball of yarn.
We will be giving you hand outs about the animals that are being shorn
and about the shearing process so that you will be able to talk about
this with the kids.
We will also need your time before the event to get everything ready.
So, plan on volunteering for either Saturday
or Sunday from 11 to 5.
Please e-mail linda@theyarntree.com
with the day you are available and what category you’d like to volunteer
for.
