Lecture: Colour, Culture, And Cloth … The Dyer's
Art
Saturday Evening
May 14th, 2005
$15.00
Place & Time TBA
Michele Wipplinger will give a personal account of the artisans who
practice the dyer's art: their culture, stories, dyes and processes, and
the traditional cloth they create. Through a narrative, interwoven with
her stunning collection of slides, she will relate the experiences she
has had wandering Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Latin America. Her
stories and anecdotes impart the essence of the dyer's ancient practices,
rich in the pattern of life and ritual, textured with the materials they
use on a daily basis. Michele's talk will emphasize the importance of
supporting dyers and dyeing traditions so they do not disappear. The lecture
will have a chromatic focus, with the dyes that fall into a particular
category forming a backdrop as she moves from process to culture. Register
