Fern Silk - a rare yarn
A beautifully handmade, fine, silk yarn using the cotton from fiddlehead ferns.
The silk yarn is produced in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
Farmers in the region gather fiddlehead ferns in the forest and remove the bit of cotton (brown fiber) before cooking the ferns.
Once they have a large enough pile of cotton it will be used as an accent in the silk yarn they spin.
Can be used for Lace Knitting (on a US size 3-5 needles) or as a Weft Yarn in Weaving (not suitable as a warp yarn).
