Welcome to The Yarn Tree

Indigo Hands

OAXACA 2024
Fundraising Campaign

I am raising funds to travel to Oaxaca, Mexico in January 2024 where I will teach two 3-day indigo workshops to local artisans. These workshops are free for the artisans!

For the artisans in Teotitlan, the indigo workshops that I teach will allow the dyers to get away from the chemical vat. They will learn to make an indigo vat using local ingredients – indigo, tamarind pods and local Cal (the lime that is used in cooking). It will be both a healthier and less expensive alternative to harsh chemicals. Then they will dye with the woolen yarns used to weave rugs (Tapetes).

The artisans of Calpulli Espacio Artesanal Comunitario, will have the opportunity to work with an entirely new technique, the clay paste resist. They will have 3 days to learn and experiment!First, we will make 3 very strong indigo vats together. Next, we will make the clay paste resist. And finally, we will be stamping, stenciling, drawing. hand painting, and screen printing on fabric before dyeing.

Please note at this time I am no longer shipping to EU countries. The shipping regulations for collecting VAT have changed and become too complicated and expensive for a small business like mine.

22nd Anniversary

The Yarn Tree opened its doors in 2001 in Brooklyn, NY as a brick & mortar retail store, teaching studio and online business.

This Year we are celebrating our 22nd Anniversary!!

Today, The Yarn Tree is an on-line only business based in Roanoke, VA.

Here you will find Natural Dyes from around the world, Foxglove Fiberarts Dyed Merino, Ashland Bay Un-dyed Merino fibers for spinning and felting, as well as handmade products.

We pride ourselves on great customer service, fast shipping and are here to answer all your fiber and dye related questions.

The Yarn Tree is an online-only business run by 1 woman - me!
I understand that this is a stressful time for all of us. I hope you can turn this time to creativity. Being creative in big or small ways can reduce stress. Using your hands actually can fire long-dormant synapses in our brains that make us feel good, relaxed and happy. We all need a little bit of that right now - I know I do!!
Please take care and stay healthy!!!
